Caregiver Training and Grants in Singapore: A Complete Guide

Comprehensive guide to caregiver training programmes and grants in Singapore, including SkillsFuture courses, AIC training, and financial support for family caregivers.

Elderwise Editorial Team22 de diciembre de 20256 min de lectura

Caring for an elderly loved one often requires skills that most people have never been formally taught. From safely transferring a parent from bed to wheelchair, to understanding medication interactions, to managing the emotional complexities of dementia care, the learning curve for family caregivers can be steep and stressful.

Singapore offers a robust ecosystem of caregiver training programmes and financial grants designed to equip family caregivers with practical skills and reduce the financial burden of care. This guide walks you through the key options available so you can build the knowledge and confidence you need.

    Why Caregiver Training Matters

Untrained caregivers face higher risks of both providing inadequate care and injuring themselves. Back injuries from improper lifting techniques, medication errors from unfamiliarity with drug interactions, and skin breakdown from incorrect positioning are all preventable with proper training.

Beyond physical skills, training helps caregivers understand disease progression, communicate more effectively with healthcare providers, recognise warning signs that require medical attention, and manage the emotional demands of their role. Trained caregivers consistently report higher confidence, lower stress, and better outcomes for their care recipients.

    Caregiver Training Centre (CTC) Programmes

The Agency for Integrated Care (AIC) operates Caregiver Training Centres through appointed service providers across Singapore. These centres offer structured, hands-on training specifically for family caregivers.

    Core Caregiving Skills

The foundational training modules cover essential caregiving tasks including safe patient handling and transfer techniques, feeding and nutrition for seniors with swallowing difficulties, wound care and skin management, catheter and stoma care, medication management and administration, and fall prevention and home safety.

These courses are taught by trained healthcare professionals and include practical demonstrations and supervised hands-on practice. They are specifically designed for lay caregivers, so no prior medical knowledge is required.

Beyond core skills, the CTCs offer training tailored to specific conditions. Dementia care modules cover communication strategies, behavioural management, and environmental modifications. Stroke care training addresses rehabilitation exercises, adaptive techniques for daily activities, and prevention of secondary complications. Palliative care modules prepare caregivers for end-of-life care decisions and comfort measures.

AIC's Caregiver Training Grant (CTG) covers up to 90 per cent of course fees at approved training centres for Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents. To apply, contact the training centre directly or visit AIC's website for a list of approved providers and courses.

    SkillsFuture for Caregivers

The SkillsFuture initiative, which provides every Singaporean aged 25 and above with credits for skills development, can be used for certain caregiving-related courses.

    Eligible Courses

SkillsFuture credits can be applied to a range of courses relevant to caregiving, including first aid and CPR certification, basic nursing skills, nutrition and meal planning for seniors, mental health first aid, and communication skills for healthcare settings.

These courses are offered by various approved training providers, including polytechnics, Institutes of Technical Education (ITE), and private training organisations. Course durations range from a few hours to several weeks, and many are available on evenings and weekends to accommodate working caregivers.

    How to Use Your Credits

Log in to the SkillsFuture portal with your SingPass to check your available credits and browse eligible courses. You can search for courses using keywords such as caregiving, eldercare, or nursing to find relevant options. Credits are applied directly at the point of enrolment.

Financial Grants and Subsidies for Caregivers

Beyond training, Singapore offers several financial grants to support family caregivers directly.

    Caregiver Training Grant (CTG)

Administered by AIC, the CTG subsidises the cost of caregiving courses at approved training centres. The grant covers up to 90 per cent of course fees for eligible applicants, with the remaining co-payment kept deliberately affordable. Each family member caring for a senior can apply for the grant, and it can be used multiple times for different courses.

    Home Caregiving Grant (HCG)

The Home Caregiving Grant provides a monthly cash payout of up to $400 to families caring for a loved one at home who has moderate to severe functional limitations. While not a training grant per se, the HCG provides financial flexibility that can be used toward training costs, respite care, or other care-related expenses.

    Foreign Domestic Worker Grant

Families that employ a foreign domestic worker (FDW) to help care for an elderly family member may qualify for the Foreign Domestic Worker Grant, which provides a monthly levy concession. The grant recognises that FDWs often serve as primary hands-on caregivers and helps offset the cost of their employment.

    Specialised Training Programmes

Several organisations in Singapore offer specialised training beyond the CTC framework.

    Dementia Singapore Training

Dementia Singapore (formerly the Alzheimer's Disease Association) offers comprehensive training programmes for family caregivers of people with dementia. Their courses cover understanding dementia, communication strategies, managing behavioural and psychological symptoms, and self-care for caregivers. Some programmes are offered free of charge.

    Singapore Red Cross

The Singapore Red Cross offers first aid courses, home nursing courses, and psychological first aid training. Their home nursing programme is particularly relevant for caregivers, covering skills such as vital signs monitoring, wound dressing, and medication management.

    Hospital-Based Programmes

Many public hospitals in Singapore offer caregiver training as part of the discharge planning process. Before a senior is discharged from hospital, the care team may provide bedside training on specific tasks the caregiver will need to perform at home, such as feeding tube management, insulin injection, or physiotherapy exercises.

Ask the hospital's medical social worker about caregiver training before your loved one is discharged. Hospital-based training is free and tailored to your specific situation. Do not hesitate to request additional sessions if you do not feel confident after the first one.

    Online Learning Resources

For caregivers who cannot attend in-person training, several online resources provide valuable education.

AIC's website hosts a library of caregiving guides, videos, and factsheets covering common tasks and conditions. Dementia Singapore offers webinars and online learning modules. The Caregivers Alliance Limited provides online workshops and support resources.

YouTube channels operated by healthcare institutions such as SingHealth and the National Healthcare Group also offer instructional videos on specific caregiving skills.

    Planning Your Training Path

With so many options available, it helps to approach caregiver training strategically.

Start by identifying your most pressing skill gaps. What tasks do you find most challenging or anxiety-inducing? What conditions does your loved one have that you want to understand better? Focus your initial training on these areas.

Then, as you grow more confident, expand into complementary skills such as nutrition planning, mental health management, and communication techniques. Remember that caregiving skills evolve over time as your loved one's needs change, so ongoing learning is both expected and supported.

At Elderwise, we are committed to empowering caregivers with knowledge and tools. Our platform helps families identify relevant training opportunities, track their learning progress, and connect with the resources they need to provide confident, competent care.
